INTRODUCTION
The great economic recovery experienced by the New Federal States of Germany in the past 20 years provided a notable boost to central Germany, in particular. The Central German States now lead the way in terms of growth, employment and income trends compared to the rest of the country. Cities such as Leipzig and Dresden have long enjoyed global recognition; spending power has now reached a high level. The wide range of recreational activities in the region with the many sights and the large tourist potential provides the perfect opportunity to combine recreation and outlet shopping. Other factors include potential visitor numbers of approximately 42 million people annually from transit traffic on the A9 motorway and a high number of overnight guests in Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony.
